certainly with today, you will notice the temperatures really jumping as they will be about 10 degrees warmer than yesterday. >> and yesterday, it felt hot and humid. let's get to the numbers. we are starting the morning with temperatures in the 70s. i couldn't find a 06 on the map. let's see if we've got one. >> there is one. let's all head there. >> -- i couldn't find a 60 on the map. let's see if we've got one. >> there is one. let's all head there. >> should be another beautiful day down at the beaches. their temperatures in the 80s and water temperatures in the 60s. all the counties in orange are under the heat advisory. that is all the counties in the district and much of north central virginia. because the heat will be unrelenting later tonight and then again during the day tomorrow, we'll keep the heat advisory right through tuesday evening at about 8:00. so heat advisory in effect again at 1:00 noon today and
that is because you combine the temperature with the humidity and it will feel like 100 degrees. >> the actual air temperature will be 92. we'll have dew point temperatures about 70s. >> i think a have a movie theater calling my name. >> good day for it. thank you. let's check in now with lauren demarco for traffic. she is in for julie. >> you should be ashamed of yourself. maybe go to the pool or beach or something. you cannot be hanging out indoors on the first hot day. >> too hot for me. >> get an umbrella, something. all right. we do have a couple of things going on on the roads. bw parkway shut down both north and southbound at 197 this morning. traffic diverted onto 198 to head over to 95. if you are head south and to the left your screen for the southbound lanes of 95, you can see they are wide open. this could tie you up a bit in you need to detour. nothing going on right now on the beltway as we take a look
elsewhere around town. in montgomery county, 270, nice, easy trip as you head out of frederick all the way down to bethesda. 95 southbound, you will find a wreck after fredericksburg near 118. the right and center lanes are blocked so stay to the left. new this morning in montgomery county, firefighters battle flames at a large barn early this morning. you can see county fire and rescue officials say this happened at a vacant farm in rockville. the fire is now out and they are still investigating. no word on any injuries.
♪ at least i know i'm free. i won't forget the one whose died who gave that right to me &&. >> thousands gathered at the whitehouse last night for the national memorial day concert. season eight american idol winner chris allen was among the performers. the star-studded tribute honored members of our military. colin powell gave a heartfelt thank you for troops at home and abroad. in observance of memorial day, there are several events planned throughout our nation's capital. >> stacy cohan is live at the world war ii memorial along the national mall with a look at what is happening today. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this is absolutely one of just the most astonishingly beautiful memorials. if you haven't been down here yet, the world war ii memorial is a great place to start your events this morning as one of the earlier wreath laying ceremonies will happen here this morning. there is a freedom wall here.
there are 4,000 gold stars, each one representing the more than 400,000 people that gave their lives touring world war ii. let's get a quick rundown of some of the events that are going to be happening. at 9:00 a.m. is the wreath laying ceremony here. >> at 11:00, we have the tomb of the unknown soldier where president obama will be but also at logan circle park, a memorial day day observance for general john a. logan who is considered to be the founder of memorial day. at 1:00 p.m., an observance at the vietnam veterans memorial and at 2:00, the parade, the national memorial day parade, always a very big event. we have gary sinise in town. he will be walking with the wounded warriors program. buzz aldrin will be here and miss america will be here. there are lots of road closures going on and it will be quite warm so make sure you bring water in you are coming down to the mall. i would advise a little bit of
bug spray too as we have them already early this morning. back to you. >> thank you. it was an army of bikers in the nation's capital yesterday. you might have heard them too. thousands came to d.c. to take part in the rolling thunder parade. this is an annual event that raises awareness about soldiers missing in action and prisoners of war. this year, there was a high profile appearance. former vice presidential candidate and former alaska governor sarah palin joined in as well as her husband and daughters bristol and piper. making headlines this morning, a vandal ends up a victim. it happened on 1th street late saturday night. police say a man targeting a deputy city administrator poured gas on his personal and official cars but the suspect lit himself on fire when he went to light one of the cars.
the suspect was last seen running down 12th street covered in flames. it is believed he suffered severe burns over much of his body. if you have any information that help laurel police, they ask that you give them a call. a maryland woman is lucky to be alive after her car plunged into i man-made pond . the woman escaped unharmed. the search for matthew hill has come to an end. the christian outreach worker was found alive and unharmed. he now know he left under his own will. dozens of volunteers along with d.c. police spent the week searching for him. 39 people remain unaccounted for a week after a deadly tornado rumbled through joplin, missouri. the department of public safety says that number has dropped because more relatives of deceased tornado victims have
been notified of their deaths. the death toll has reached nearly 140 people, more than 900 have reportedly suffered injuries of some type from that storm. president obama was in joplin sunday to pay respects to those killed in that tornado. he came face for face with survivors. the president says he was inspired by the response to the tragedy and promised victim ongoing support when it comes to the rebuilding process. president obama is now back at the white house and his trip to missouri came after a six-day tour of europe. the space shuttle endeavour is now heading back to earth. a wrap of its final mission coming up next on fox 5. an armed robbery at a local fast-food restaurant. we have the latest details from police on what happened when fox 5 morning news continues. wednesday. we'll be scorching hot. our heat index will be over 100 today. this is cool time of the day. if you want to go if a run, that kind of thing, go right now. 07 in gaithersburg. 72 in leonardtown. -- 70 in gaithersburg. 72 in cambridge. another beautiful day down at the beaches. temperatures in the low 80s expected. plenty of sunshine, water temperatures hanging out in the low to mid-60s. that is the place to be. for the rest of us, we are getting in on the heat and again, our high temperatures later today will be in the low 90s. no chance for thunderstorm activity today. the atmosphere is tapped as we've got high pressure moving overhead so we just don't have an opportunity for even much in the waive cloudiness today. i think it will be a mostly sunny day. notice out to the west, there is not much of anything going on. our next cold front will get in here and give us the possibility of some thunderstorm activity late in the day on wednesday. but until then, lots of sunshine. our winds will be out of the west here and a lot of heat.

time to do that. you want to hit the road before 11:00 a.m. we do have a wreck on the bw parkway. it has all lands both north and southbound shut down at 197. traffic is being diverted southbound onto 198 to head over to 95. here you are looking at 95 where it is a nice trip out of laurel. you can see no problems there. at least there is a good alternate for you but again, bw parkway shut down in both direction between 198 and 197. in virginia, 95 southbound, here we are at mile marker 126. night light volume out there. we have a wreck report at 118 which blocks the two right leans lanes. that's a check of your - - two right lanes. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. rolling thunder roared into d.c. yesterday and for many veterans, the annual parade is made even more special by one man. they call him the lone marine
and if years, he has gone unnamed. the story of tribute untold until now. fox 5's tisha thompson has his story. >> reporter: in a city dedicated to monumental sacrifices, there is one that stands strong and never vppedders. >> it just gave me chills. i'm impressed. i can't believe he is out there. >> reporter: retired march even staff sergeant tim chambers has stood at this post. >> to hold a salute that long tacks a lot of determination and discipline. this guy does it every year. >> with a stiff spine and straight shoulders this lone marine stands at attention as the thunder rolls by. for more than three hours. >> they doom by me and i get an eyeball at them and i'm trying to give every one of them that welcome home they didn't get.
>> reporter: chambers says it started as a spontaneous thank you but is now his moral obligation. >> 0 years in the corps. air force drill instructor. i am totally impressed with this young man. >> reporter: retired marine corps major larry carman says hold august salute this long is nearly impossible for a he'll they marine and unthinkable for a wounded warrior. >> he has a broken wrist. god bless him. >> reporter: only the slightest of a tremble gaffe chambers way. i broken wrist that should have been in a cast. instead, held high in a salute. >> i knew something was different. he started to waver today. >> that is dedication. >> reporter: as one hour bled into the next, the temperature started to soar. >> if you actually watch hum right now, he is in distress. >> they ferried water and aspirin to chambers when it became apparent this soldier
was in pain. >> veterans help each other and that is what i'm all about. >> if he falls down out there, we're going to go help him. >> reporter: but diane says she knows her son would never let that happen. >> he was very determined. everything he did, he put 150% into it. >> reporter: she says he got it from his 81-year-old grandmother who every year quietly stands on the sidelines refusing to sit down until her grandson finishes what he started. >> it is really emotional. >> reporter: the lone marine has now become a bit of a celebrity. people flock to this corner just to get a picture of him. but rather hand let it go to his head, chambers says he hopes others will follow his example. >> i'm doing this because america needs to see it and i want them to emulate that any which way they can across the country the. >> reporter: because for staff
sergeant tim chambers, when it comes to remembering those who served, you never give up, you never surrender. >> that is amazing. staff sergeant tim chambers made it the full three hours. he says he is going to get a cast for that broken wrist today. a record-breaking weekend at the box office. a big winner, the hangover part ii. up next, part 2 of kevin mccarthy's sit-down about the movie. these sweet honey clustery things have fiber?

this began as shoplifting but quickly they had to child abuse and the woman was involved in a car accident. >> reporter: wal-mart surveillance video provided by chandler police, 23-year-old nicky paige, child in her arms, shoplifting. security catches up to her, blocking her way, asking her to stop. >> as you see, she actually strikes the child's head against the door frame as she is running out the store. runs out to her car, which she has parked in a handicapped spot, puts the child in the car with no safety restraint, puts the child in the front seat of
the car. >> reporter: she backs up into a car behind her doing $2,400 in damage. she speeds away. >> a couple of days later, she shows back up in the same area in chandler, goes into a nail salon and is shoplifting nailal on product. the people recognized her. >> they called the cops. busted. >> certainly someone that is not thinking things through, just a very bad situation. >> police say she had an outstanding warrant for marijuana possession and marijuana in her car. >> that was steve kraft reporting. apparently a very bad day. >> to say the least. a push for pool safety as we head into the summer vacation season. >> that is coming up next on fox 5. plus, a big advancement for the terps. we are talking men's la crosse. things are good there. we have more after the break. here is a live look outside. taking a look at the beltway in

la crosse national championship today. the terps are making their first final four appearance since 2006 after knocking off fifth-seeded duke 9-4 in the semifinals on saturday. they were led behind a hat trick from senior grant catalino. this was maryland's first national championship game since 1998. they will be shooting for their first tight until 36 years. the cavs have won six national championships. the last was in 2006. kathy reese and the maryland women were looking for a second straight ncaa la crosse title against northwestern. in the first half, maryland goes up 4-1 with nice passing. but the lead would not hold up. northwestern northwestern rallies to win edging maryland 8-7 to win the national championship. no shortage of high drama at the 100th anniversary of the indianapolis 500. what an unbelievable finish. j.r.hildebrand is in the lead as he laps the car in the fourth and final tournament but the 23-year-old goes right into the wall. dan weldon would go on to win
if you are looking for an easy and flavorful dish, we have got one for you. tony is outside with this one. >> we are here with chef christian evans, the final cut steak house. you guys are new. you opened in november. >> already, there is a lot of buzz about this restaurant and the beef that you serve. it is prime beef and what does that mean. >> all the beef that we serve at the at the final cut steak house the top 1% of all beef produced in america, 28-day wet aged beef from the west. >> top 1%. tell me how it is different from what we might buy in the grocery store, get at other restaurants. >> as you can see here, this is a very nice strip steak that you can find in most restaurants or any grocery store. this would be choice. this is what the majority of
all beef is. sitting next on our prime. you can see the marbling through our prime steak. that makes it more tender, juicy. >> this is a fine dining restaurant. it is becoming a destination in addition to the casino itself, the restaurant too is drawing people out there. >> correct. we have a lot of clientele driving from an and del, bethesda, this area where a scenic one-hour drive from the d.c. metropolitan area. >> well, that is a very good travelogue you're doing there. >> this is a $12 appetizer on
our menu. this is two kobe sliders with caramelized onions. >> is it kobe? >> it is kobe. slideers are fun to do at your house for any event because can you change them up. can you do 40 different sliders, just use different condiments and have them trayed up ahead of time. we just season them with salt and pepper. we use a pepper blend so you get all the aspect frf the pepper from the spiciness of the black better to the fruitiness of pink peppercorns. >> to me, this is the hard of the part. because the sliders are a little thick so you want to cook them fairly thoroughly. >> these are about 15 minutes to a medium rare on these. in our restaurant, they are slightly quicker. we brawl awful our steaks on a 1600-degree broiler. >> now, final cut steak house. it is fine dining.
